How to Protect Your Pool From Florida Storms and Hurricanes

Florida’s hurricane season can be tough on outdoor spaces, especially swimming pools. Heavy rain, strong winds, and flying debris can cause serious damage if you're not prepared. Follow these smart steps to keep your pool safe before, during, and after a storm.

1. Don't Drain the Pool

It may seem smart to lower the water level, but draining your pool too much can cause structural damage. The groundwater during storms may push an empty pool upward, so only lower a few inches if necessary.

2. Turn Off All Power to Pool Equipment

Shut down power at the circuit breaker for all pool pumps, heaters, and lighting. This prevents electrical issues if flooding occurs or equipment gets damaged.

3. Secure or Store Loose Objects

Pool furniture, umbrellas, toys, and even planters can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Bring them inside or tie them down securely.

4. Add Extra Chlorine Before the Storm

Stormwater can contaminate your pool. Adding extra chlorine beforehand can help sanitize the water and prevent algae growth after the storm passes.

5. Inspect and Clean After the Storm

Once it’s safe, remove debris with a skimmer and check for damage. Test the water’s chemical levels and clean the filter system thoroughly before using the pool again.

Preparing your pool ahead of time can save you money and stress. With the right precautions, you can protect your pool from Florida’s unpredictable weather and enjoy peace of mind all season long.
